biographical and/or anecdotal:
*Francis D. Stephen and *Tamizone Bunting Stephen moved to Green County, Indiana
and lived between Little Cinncinati and Solsberry.
*Amanda Melissa Stephen had already married
Thomas Jefferson Mercer, May 9 1859 in Noble County, Ohio.
Tradition says that Tamizone rode side-saddle all the way from Noble County
to Greene County, Indiana with her youngest within her.
Also family tradition says that they lived in Green County when several Indians still lived there.
One very large and apparently very ugly Indian with an unusually large nose
kept showing up at their back-door for hand-outs at meal-times.
Getting tired of feeding him, to say nothing of the cost Tamizone asked Francis
to take the Indian along on his next trip to Louisville, Kentucky and not bring him back.
It was done and they didn't see the Indian for several months, in fact they had
forgotten about him. One day a knock sounded at the back door,
upon opening it there was that Indian again. Tamizone said "Go away."
He shook his head no. She tried to shut the door but he got his big foot into it.
Again she said "Go away. I don't know you." He just nodded his head "yes"
and pointed to his big nose and said "Yes!". So again they had to feed him.
Both Francis and Tamizone are buried in the cemetary at Solsberry,
Green County, Indiana. It says Amanda Mellisa Stephen died in Lawrence County,
Illinois and was buried in GreenCounty, Indiana so it is assumed
she was buried with her parents.
