biographical
and/or anecdotal:
notes or source:
Stephen Mackey of Uniontown, PA, was
apparently a descendent of Shenandoah Valley explorer John Mackey, who immigrated
to Jamestown, VA about 1700, resided at Timber Ridge, VA, and is buried (1773) in
the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church (formerly Ulster Presbyterian Church). John
Mackey was a neighbor of the family of Samuel Houston of Texas fame. Family lore
has it that the Mackey's who came from Ireland were quarrymen, and that agrees with
accounts about John Mackey's involvement building "Greystones", buildings
of local granite or limestone in the Lexington, VA area. Lexington is 7 miles from
Timber Ridge, VA.

I have seen the 1759 birth date
for Stephen before, but I believe it is incorrect. I have a copy of his will. In
it, he refers to himself as being quite old at a time when he would have been only
in his 50's. Also, I have a photo of his headstone in the Tent Presbyterian Cemetery
near Union Town. It lists his birth as 1742.
