biographical and/or anecdotal:
Thomas Lardin
Irish Immigrant born 1765 Northern Ireland.
Settled on a 1000 acre plot in what
is now Butler County. Along with Patrick Harvey, these were the first two settlers
of what is now Clinton Township, Butler, Co. but was then part of Alleghney Co. Some
of his children were born east of the mountains and the rest here.
In the earliest
Butler Co. histories, Thomas Lardin was the owner of the first iron plow in Butler
County. He was Scotch-Irish and fell out with some of his sons over the matter of
religion when some were converted to Methodism.
They claimed he was much of a
gentleman. When the clearing was made on his land, they had to keep fire going to
keep wolves and bears away from the children.
He was probably not Irish since
he was not Catholic.
