biographical and/or anecdotal:
An esteemed criminal lawyer in Taney County, Missouri.
Andrew Jackson Pruitt was born in Cocke County, Tennessee, July 5, 1834. He was named for Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States.
Census Record 1850 Cocke County, Tennessee, District No. 11 August 30, 1850
Household No. Name Age Sex occupation Birthplace
258 Pruitt, Stacy'- 38 S.C. Can't read or write
Andrew 18 Labor Tenn.
Nathaniel 11 Tenn.
Stacy Pruitt, a female 38 years of age and head of thehousehold,
was born in South Carolina and could neither read nor write.
She apparently had two sons living with her.
(NOTE: We are only assuming that she is their mother.
Roy Pruitt, son of Howard Pruitt, said that James Nathaniel was a half-brother to Andrew.)
On or about the year 1850, Andrew J. Pruitt married Eliza 'Jane' Cameron in Tennessee. They were to become the parents of ten children.
Andrew, Jane, their two little boys, J. Howard and George, and a good old dog named Fleet
migrated about 1856 from 20 miles east of Nashville? Tennessee to Missouri.
They had 35 cents in money when they arrived at the end of their journey.
Their first home in the state was a log cabin and cooking was done on an open fireplace.
Steamboats which used wood for fuel brought supplies from St. Louis.
Andrew traded cordwood to one of the navigators for a stove.
Andrew, a well-educated man, was a grade school teacher in Saline County, Missouri.
Because the population of the region was approximately half English and half German,
the lessons were taught in English in the mornings and then repeated in German during the afternoons.
Adult students came to his home in the evenings where he instructed them in the French language.
The earliest official records we have of Andrew, Jane and family are in the 1860 Missouri Census taken June 15th. Number 55766, Leesburg P.O., Springfield Township, County of Henry No.801.
In Household No. 179 - 179, the following occupants are listed:
Andrew Pruitt age 26 - male, teacher common school, property $350. born in Tenn.
Eliza J. Pruitt age 25 - female, born in Tenn.
George N. Pruitt age 7 - male, born in Tenn.
Joseph H. Pruitt age 5 - male, born in Tenn.
John M. Pruitt age 3 - male, born in Tenn.
David Pruitt age 1 - male, born in Mo.
Stacy Pruitt age 47 - female, born in S.C.
James N. Pruitt age 21 - male, born in S.C.
When the Civil War began Andrew was teaching school near his home when a band of Northern soldiers
rode by on their horses. He dismissed the children and left with the troop
without even returning home to say good-by to his family.
His younger brother, James Nathaniel Pruitt, also joined the Union Army.
They were captured by Confederate soldiers and taken to enemy territory.
As there were no jails they were put in an open camp, given a blanket to sleep on,
and forced to surrender their shoes.
The Pruitts sneaked off barefooted and arrived home after a hard and tedious journey.
In October 1867, the Pruitts and Camerons moved to the Ozark Mountains
and settled in Mincy Valley, located in Taney County, Missouri.
A.J. Pruitt bought the John Campbell farm on White River at the mouth of Mincy Creek
which is in Scott Township. He farmed, studied law and was admitted to the
Missouri State Bar and practiced law in Forsyth, Kirbyville, and other towns.
Much of his work was getting pensions for disabled war veterans and their dependents.
The Taney County, Missouri Census of 1870 lists Andrew J. Pruitt as 36 years
of age, a farmer and born in Tennessee. Andrew died of pneumonia on February 4, 1879
and was buried in the Pruitt Cemetery near Mincy Creek.
Now these valley lowlands are part of a large reservior created by the Bull Shoals Dam.
The burial plots where Andrew Jackson Pruitt and three or perhaps more of his children
lay buried for some 70 odd years are now covered with up to 400 feet of water.
Before the dam was completed the Corps of Engineers removed 12 burials from
the little Pruitt Cemetery to Mt. Olive near Kirbyville, Missouri.
Bull Shoals Dam on White River near Mt. Home, Arkansas
was completed in July 1952 at a cost of $78 million.

The following information is from Mrs. Lee (Winnie) Yandell, March 4, 1975:
"From the record of Pruitt Cemetery near Mincy Creek - ?.
There were 12 graves removed, only marker was A.J. Pruitt.
His grave number from government file is Cemetery No. BSC R, relocated number 201.
This grave is in Northwest corner of the Casey-Yandell Cemetery (Mt. Olive).
There were three cemeteries moved to this location.
The graves were under water a lot of the time by the high rise of White River.
Mr. Pruitt's grave had part of his suit pants in casket or box when moved.
Bull Shoals Lake has the three former cemeteries covered.
I did not go to see the markings on the Pruitt grave, but I do know it has some.,,

CORDIE PRUITT MOORE REMEMBERS
Cordie wrote: "Andrew Jackson Pruitt wore a little goat-tee.
He told his wife, Jane, he wore the little goat-tee so she would have something to
lead him around by. He would always laugh when he told her that. A.J. died from pneumonia.
He was getting better, but when a door was left open he grew worse from the draft."

Cocke County History
Once part of North Carolina, and (unofficially) the State of Franklin, Tennessee became a State June 1, 1796. Cocke County was established on October 9, 1797 from a part of Jefferson County, Tennessee. Jefferson County was established in 1792 from a part of Greene County, Tennessee. Greene County was established in 1783 from a part of Washington County, first of North Carolina, until it became a State, then Tennessee.
Cocke County took it's name from William Cocke, one of the two first US senators from the State of Tennessee, and a friend of John Sevier.
From Ramsey's Annals of Tennessee, the first settlement of Cocke County was in the spring of 1783 when James Gilleland cleared cane from a tract of ground in the Fork of the French Broad and Big Pigeon Rivers at the mouth of the latter, and cultivated it in corn, but no cabin was built at that time.
This was followed by the location and clearing of land adjoining William Coleman, where the first cabin was built on the bank of (the Agiqua) French Broad River. This became the nucleus of the settlement of the Big Pigeon and French Broad Rivers. These first men were of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
In the Jefferson County census taken in 1795, which included current Cocke and Sevier Counties at that time, were a total of 7,840 persons, including 1,706 free white males 16 years and up, 2,225 free white males age less than 16 years, 3,021 white females, 776 slaves and 112 other free persons.
